backups into tomorrow. the virginia state police say a tire on a tractor trailer blew out as that truck was traveling along the highway south of fredericksburg. it was near route 606. the tractor trailer ran into a guardrail and then hit several trees before it flipped over and burst into flames. the driver of that truck was killed. his identity has not yet been released. state police say the crash cleanup will continue tomorrow. >>> police in montgomery county went door to door tonight. they're passing out flyers after an elderly woman was sexually assaulted in a senior living facility. the attack happened a week and a half ago at the churchill senior living center in germantown. police say an 86-year-old woman was asleep in her bed when the man climbed through the window and assaulted her. just two months ago another woman was assaulted inside her ground floor apartment right across the street. police are not yet saying whether the two cases are related. >>> a woodbridge, virginia, man remains in jail after police say he took pictures of women's skirts at the potomac mills mall. polic
, driving rains moving from the carolinas into virginia now. good evening, i'm jim vance. doreen is off this morning. the rain is already battering parts of north carolina as hurricane earl edges even closer to our area. states of emergency have been declared up and down the east coast. residents are preparing to board up in virginia beach, bracing for a direct hit along the cape in massachusetts. let's get right to our meteorologist doug cameron now. >> great news here continuing to come in from the national hurricane center. earl continues to weaken, just 105 miles an hour, that is now a cat ge category 2 storm. something else, it's a little further offshore, that means the winds are not going to be nearly as devastating as they could have been if the eye of the storm was coming closer to shore. look at this jog it's taken the last couple hours off to the north and east. it will make its way up the coast well o our shore line, but we have along the atlantic beaches, we have that tropical storm warning that is in effect through the day tomorrow. we're going to be watching it closely du
stayed out in the atlantic today. in virginia and north carolina, leaders are inviting visitors to enjoy a nice weekend, but things are much different to the north. michelle franzen reports. >> reporter: a weakening but still powerful earl churned north and well east of nantucket, but passed with heavy winds and rain. the vacation island received the brunt of the storm. heavy surf and hurricane-force wind gusts lashed the coast. many residents and vacationers out earlier in the day before earl stormed in took cover once the heavy rain bands moved in. in chatham the threat of earl wasn't enough to stop this couple from saying "i do." >> it will always be memorable, that's for sure. it's given us plenty of challenges, but nothing is stopping us. >> reporter: lasting memories of each other and their special day, shared with a hurricane. earl wreaked havoc all along the eastern seaboard, beginning with the north carolina outer banks overnight. the eye of the storm staying far offshore but close enough to bring driving wind and rain to the barrier islands. on new york's long island, powerful
